Art Deco is a term generally applied to decorative art style in 1920-1930's, which  influenced  modernism and industrial design. Geometric pattern is one of the distinctive character of Art Deco. Art Deco style can be seen not only in fine art but in industrial design such as radio, train, tableware and architecture.  Examples of Art Deco Architecture in America can be seen in skyscrapers of New York or Chicago. The Chrysler building of New York is a good example; however, Art Deco architecture found in Miami Beach  has a different vision.  With the influence of international style architecture, it's architecture is  simpleer than very decorative architecture of those in New York.  Simple stucco wall with bright pastel color, geometric shaped decoration buildings were born in sub-tropical weather  in Miami where is winter heaven of tourist from all over the world. This tropical deco architecture is very unique and only seen in Miami Beach.

 Art Deco Historic District

         Within about 1 square mile, there are 800 art deco buildings in this district. In 1930's, with the booming of tourism, art deco style hotel and residential buildings was built one after another in Miami Beach, especially in South Beach, but with the decline of tourism  in 60's, the area began deteriorating.  To save these unique art deco buildings "Miami Design Preservation League " was founded in 1976, and the area was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. With the economic boom in 90's, deteriorated or  abandoned buildings were restored.  In these years, old small art deco hotels were reborn as  chic boutique hotels or restaurants, which invite tourists from all over the world as used to be.
